Sec1 Orientation Camp 2012! :)

During the December holidays, the Student Councillors prepared for the annual Sec 1 Orientation Camp. Knowing that this camp will be very important for the new Sec 1s coming into the school, the Councillors put in all their hearts and efforts to make sure that this camp would be a success! The councillors organized various activities for the students to have fun and bond in their classes.

During the orientation, we could see the Sec 1 students and the councillors having much fun together, learning about their new school and their new friends as they engaged in the different activities.
Our dear Sec 1 Year Head, Ms Evelyn Wu, led some of the talks with the students to orientate them to their life. Moreover, some alumni Councillors also came back to give their support and well wishes to the new batch of students.All in all, the camp was a success! :D

Service Learning Trip, Vietnam 2011

In November 2011, the Student Councillors in Secondary 2, as well as the Executive Committee of the Council embarked on a meaningful 7 days Service-Learning Trip to Vietnam! Mr Chia, Mr Chui, Ms Tay and Ms Tang joined along too. This Service Learning Trip aims to give the Councillors a valuable opportunity to :

Serve the Kindergarten in Dong Thap Province through infrastructure works of the school compound to provide a better teaching and learning environment.
Interact with the kindergarten kids through the teaching of basic English and handicrafts.
Exchange our culture with the people in Vietnam.
Grow to become servant leaders with a HEART!

So what does HEART really represents?

Throughout this whole trip, the Councillors have experienced with many situations that have caused them to think deep on those values. These lessons have helped the Councillors to find their true self. After all, being true to yourself is the main key in being a Leader.

This Service Learning Trip have definitely made a huge impact in all the Councillors who went to Vietnam. Indeed, the Councillors will use these life lessons during their daily lives. :)

Public Speaking Workshop 2011

The Student Council organized a 2-Day Public Speaking Workshop for the Class Management Committee members, as well as for the trainees and new councillors. During the workshop, many student leaders learned to overcome their fears and practised on their presentation skills. The students also developed stronger bonds throughout the workshop.

Exams!!! The thing that all students dread but have to go through... The Student Council knows that Hendersonians, like all other students in schools everywhere, will be undergoing lots of stress during the examinations. Hence, to make this period of assessment be easier to bear, the Pupil Relations Department put up boards in the foyer and encouraged people to write encouragement cards for their friends. Many teachers, including our beloved OM Mr. Sim wrote cards for the students, and students also wrote cards for one another. It was really heart-warming to see such a supportive environment in the school =)

1T1 Mentoring by the Pupil Development Dept 2011

The Pupil Development Department of the Student Council is newly set up this year. It's aim is to provide a structured platform for student leaders to mentor selected students in the school. A department for students, of students and by students, it started off with a blank page. After numerous brain-storming sessions, the department and its teachers-in-charge, Mr. Chui and Ms Hu decided to focus on the 1T1 students as the target of the mentoring session.

In conjunction with the Japanese Well-Wishes Compilation, the Councillors led selected 1T1 students to make a video to thank the Hendersonians for their kind acts. In the process, everyone had lots of fun and laughter, and it was not hard to see the bonding that took place between the students and the councillors.

It's completed! The compilation of the well-wishes cards made by Hendersonians were compiled and bond together by Councillors in the Pupil Development Department. Hui Yee, our President, along with Jarrat, the Department Head, and Fernando, who represented the Sec 3s and the CCAs, delivered the compilation to the Japanese Embassy with Mr. Chui and Ms Tay. The diplomat at the Embassy was very touched by the beautiful and sincere gift. During the short amount of time we spent there, unspoken feelings of friendship flowed between us.

Well-wishes for Japan 2011

The tragedy in Japan was deeply felt across the globe, and even Hendersonians themselves wish that they could do something for the Japanese. Other than donating cash to Japan through Red Cross International, the students, in their classes, got together to make a well-wishes book for Japan. Each and every one of the card was designed and beautified by the students themselves, and many of the messages warmed the hearts of the readers. It really made this year's International Friendship Day very different.

Chinese New Year Celebration-cum-Fund Raising 2011

For Chinese New Year this year, apart from the usual celebration, the Pupil Welfare Department of the Student Council decided to conduct a Fund-raising drive for the school's Financial Assistance students. The councillors asked for donations-in-kind (teddy bears and all sorts of cute things) from students and teachers, and sold lucky draw tickets for them. Many students bought the tickets, not because of the lucky draw items, but because they want to play a part in making the school a more humane and happier place.

The lucky draw was held in the middle of the series of performances, and the entire school enjoyed the celebration very much! =D

Sec 1 Orientation 2011

During the December holidays, the Student Councillors prepared for the upcoming Sec 1 Orientation Camp. Knowing that the camp will be instrumental in inducting the new students into the school, as well as bond the classes together, the Councillors put in their all to make sure that the camp would be a success.

During the camp itself, we could see the Sec 1 students and the councillors having much fun together, learning about their new school and their new friends as they engaged in the different activities. The campfire held on the 2nd night was very exciting, with students cheering and singing by the fire.

All in all, the camp was a huge success! Kudos to the Student Council!!

Perak Trip Nov 2010

In Nov 2010, Student Councillors in Secondary 2, as well as the Executive Committee of the Council and new CCA Heads embarked on a 3D2N trip to Perak, Malaysia, for a leadership expedition. Led by Mr. Chui, Ms Tang, Ms Tay and Ms Hu, the kids took an overnight coach deep into the Peninsula. They arrived near to the biggest cave in Perak for fresh Nasi Lemak breakfast, before proceeding straight to a waterfall nearby for what would be for most of them a once-in-a-lifetime experience!!

The student councillors learned about the art of abseiling, and then witnessed professionals abseiled down a waterfall. To most of the student leaders, abseiling itself is already a feat that they would be able to boast about. To add a waterfall to this accomplishment is more than most of them could bear! But true to the adventurous spirit of youths, the councillors all attempted and completed the task, to the deafening applause of their fellow councillors!

The next activity on the menu is white-water rafting. The students got into groups of sixes, and together with an instructor, braved rapids and rocks to travel down a fast-moving river. Along the way, some of the rafts capsized and all the other rafts surrounding the capsized group were very anxious. However, they all managed to come back up to the surface and got back into the raft, undaunted and ready to face the next rapid! Every team was cheering everyone else along, and it was very heartening to see the rapport being built among the student leaders of Henderson.

The councillors stayed in a cosy resort, and they and the teachers had a meaningful night bonding and sharing. The next day, the councillors undertook the last activity for the trip: caving in the biggest cave in Perak. They braved the cold, the wetness, and the darkness to walk, climb, and sometimes swim through the cave. The councillors cheered and supported one another on the way, sometimes using their torchlights to shine the way for their peers. Everyone finished the caving activity tired but immensely satisfied.

After an afternoon of R&R in Ipoh, the entourage took an overnight coach back to Singapore, bringing back with them memories of the meaningful trip. =)

Teachers' Day 2010

It's Teachers' Day once again! This year, the Council decided to do something different: the Councillors prepared cards for all students to write for their respective subject teachers, so that all the students would have an avenue to express their gratitude to their teachers. Some of the cards were very nicely decorated, and most of the students penned down their appreciation for their teachers. The Council had to coordinate the writing of the cards, as some of the subjects were banded, so the students taught by a teacher for the same subject could come from different classes. However, the councillors who were helping out felt that the hard work was worth it as they were able to help bridge the communication between the student body and the teachers.

On Teachers' Day itself, as was the custom of Henderson Secondary School, the students came in their own clothes. Some of the students were very creatively dressed, and they were chosen by their teachers to participate in the Be Yourself Day competition. The emcees for the Teachers' Day celebration were all councillors, with Gina (3E3) and Fernando (2E1) being the main emcees, Fayiza and Angelica (both from 1N1) helping out with Be Yourself Day segment, and Erica and Pei Yi (1E3) being the comperes for the Guess the Teacher game. The entire school enjoyed the celebration very much, and the teachers especially felt their hearts warmed by the gestures of gratitude by the students. Some students sang (and even composed) for their teachers, and some students danced!

A special item put up by the Student Council Exco was a skit protraying some teachers and typical Hendersonians. The script was written by Tan Hui Yee, our very industrious and talented President, and all the actors and actresses were members of the Exco. The skit was very well-received by the audience, for it was a humourous yet accurate protrayal of the actual situation in the classroom.

Remember the Public Speaking Workshop that the Council organized in June? This time round, we invited the Master Speaker of the public speaking workshop vendor "Take the Stage", to speak to the Council as well as the CMCs on his personal life experiences as well as any encouragement he had for the student leaders. Mr. Eric Feng, a public speaker with many years of experience as well as many awards under his belt, was a captivating speaker who encouraged the student leaders to work towards their goals and not give up on their dreams. It was indeed an apt speech for the students who were preparing for their End-of-Year Exams.

It was a day of pride for many parties, not only for the newly invested councillors themselves, but also for their parents (some of whom came down to grace the ceremony), the teachers and all the other Hendersonians!

Cheers and applause followed whenever a councillor received their badge and tie from the Vice-Principal, Mrs. Goh, while Mr. Simen our dear Principal, gave a passionate speech about what it means to LEAD.

Hui Yee, our newly invested President, gave a speech to mark the first day she takes over the office of the de facto Student Leader of the school. We can definitely trust her to take the Council to greater heights!

National Day 2010

The Council has once again successfully completed any project. This time round, it is the National Day 2010: The Founding Fathers of Singapore project, which is endorsed by the National Youth Council under the Campus Changemakers scheme.

We first started off the project by announcing the inter-class competition criteria, which consisted of participating in honoring the founding fathers of Singapore by using essays, cartoons, discussion in forums, posters and doing of a quiz on a related exhibition. The response from the school was lukewarm at first, but they gradually warm up to the challenge. We had many classes participating in the exhibition quiz, which no doubt they could only complete by going around the exhibition and reading up on the history of the first decade of Singapore. Many thanks to National Archives Board for being able to supply us with the travelling exhibition at such short notice!

After consolidating all the entries and summing up the marks the different classes have obtained, we had 3 winning classes: 1E4, 3E1, and 4E2. These classes competed during the National Day celebration itself, participating in a Jeopardy-like quiz that presented questions that was obtained from the exhibition itself. In the end, the winning class is 4E2, followed by 1E4, and lastly 3E1. They won for themselves cash vouchers of $100, $80 and $60 respectively. These vouchers were purchased with fundings from Campus Changemakers, a project that aims to let students initiate and implement a (school) community project, funding them 80% of their proposed budget, thus giving them a headstart.

At the same time, during the National Day celebration, we also had a side quiz, some what like Who wants to be a Millionaire, where the entire school participated. Response was great, for the students, armed with the knowledge they have gained from the travelling exhibition, all vied to be the first to raise up their hands to answer the quiz. For both quizzes, after every question, our emcees took the chance to explain to the crowd about the background of the historical fact, thus educating the school on the contributions of the founding fathers at the same time.

One particular class that was worth mentioning is 2E3. Under the guidance of their form teacher, Mrs Alsagoff, they submitted around 10 posters, some of them very professionally done! In recognition of their effort, they were presented with a Special Prize during the celebration itself. Their posters will be posted at the NE Square soon, so do keep a lookout!

June Public Speaking Workshop cum Council Camp!!

Striving to develop leadership qualities in all the student leaders of Henderson, the Student Council, under the advice of Mr. Vincent Chia, organized the first ever Public Speaking Workshop in school. Trainers from the company Take the Stage came and taught the students how to carry themselves in a speech, points to take note, as well as emcee skills. The student leaders were all very responsive and engaged throughout the camp. In the end of the 2-day workshop, a competition was held, and Kenley Chin, the NPCC CCA Head for 2009-10 was chosen as the best speaker. Congrats to Kenley!

Immediately after the Public Speaking Workshop, the council had its overnight June Council Camp. It was an evening and night (yup we slept at 5am!!) of fun and laughter, bonding and sharing =)

Some of our Sec 3 councillors whom themselves attended some leadership camps during early June got together to organize all the games and activities of the camp. We had dynamic games like Amazing Race and more sedentary activities like our Grand Finale, where every group has to present a skit or performance on the theme of "Leadership" or "Teamwork".

We ended the camp with a mass cheer led by the current councillors, and eventually even the trainees joined in. It was an unforgettable camp! Thanks everyone for your participation!

Exam Encouragement (May 2010)

The Mid-Year Exams are coming, and all the students are gearing up for the battle! This year, the Student Council has decided to organize an Exam Encouragement Board, so that students can encourage one another to press on even though it may not be easy.

It was very heartening to see that the students responded very actively to this opportunity! Many students posted their words of encouragement on the board, some sending them not only to their personal friends, but also to their entire class, the entire level, or even to the entire school!

Even teachers started to make use of the opportunity to rally their students on! It must have been very heartening for the students to read these well wishes, especially those who may have started to falter in their revision.

March Birthday 2010

Q: How do you make someone know that you care? A: Remember things about that person, what he said, important dates regarding him etc.

Based on this theory, the Student Council is starting to celebrate all the councillors' birthdays this year! Not everyday or every week though... we are celebrating the birthdays every end of term.

This March-April period marks the first celebration that we have! From the photos, you could see that the councillors are all enjoying themselves! =)

Trainee Briefing March 2010

After receiving recommendations and suggestions from the teachers, as well as self-nomination forms from Hendersonians, selected students were asked to attend an interview with the Council teachers and the current Exco. The interview served to help us identify students who are of a correct mindset to be a trainee councillor.

After the interview, the teachers and the Exco got together to select the finalized trainee list. These trainees were asked to attend a briefing on their duties and the structure of the Student Council during the March Holidays. They also got to know of the expectations that we have of all councillors i.e. Servant Leadership, Exemplary Conduct, and Integrity.

The Exco helped to conduct the briefing, and they did it professionally! Let's look forward to a great year ahead together!

Spring cleaning time has arrived for the Council!! Our Council room was in a mess, especially after all the logistics left over from the Sec 1 Orientation camp. Some time in March, our current Exco led by Michelle and other Sec 3 councillors volunteered their services one Saturday to clean up the room.

All the councillors worked together as a team, taking things out from the room and sorting them out into useful (especially for future events) items and not-so-useful (with respect to our operations) items. At the same time, another bunch of councillors was in the room cleaning up the place, wiping and moping even the hard-to-reach corners.

After several hours, we were finally (almost) done!! See how happy we are!! =DD

The Student Council of Henderson successfully conducted the Sec 1 Orientation Camp for the new Sec 1 students of Henderson, 2010. During the camp, the councillors organized various activities for the students to have fun and bond in their classes. The classes were led by their Peer Leaders, which comprised of not only councillors but also other students with exemplary conduct. During the orientation, the new Hendersonians learned more about life in the secondary school, as well as more about Henderson Secondary School. Our dear Sec 1 Year Head, Mr. Zubi Kek, led some of the talks with the children to orientate them to their life. Moreover, some alumni Councillors also came back to give their support and well wishes to the new batch of students.

Not all prefects have to stay overnight on 6th Jan. Only Peerleaders and the EXCOS need to stay throughout the whole camp.
Example for Class banners, they need to be there on 6th Jan only, so they dont have to attend 5th and 7th Jan's. They will be reporting back to their own classes. Please report 1hour before your programme starts.
